ESTABLISHMENT OF KALARANG
As a college student, Amit always liked to participate in cultural activities. When in Modern College, he was the most enthusiastic participant who bagged trophies in singing competitions, theatre contests like Purushottam Karandak , Firodiya Karandak & MOM Karandak. Amit donned a wide variety of roles, but the character of freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak essayed by him was the most successful in his acting stint.
While studying in second year B.A., Amit went on to establish ‘Kalarang’, an organization that brought together budding artists from various fields. With more than 200 members, the organization was set up Chinchwad. The role of Kalarang was not only limited to cultural activities. It took up the cause of various issues like social awareness, child education, adult education etc. Drives were carried out to create awareness on these. An AIDS awareness programme was also conducted on behalf of PCMC.
It was during this period that Amit came across film and theatre personalities. Rahul Solapurkar was prominent amongst them. Rahul assumed the position of a true mentor, guide and loyal friend in Amit’s life and remains so even today Kalarang started a unique awards ceremony, the ‘Kalagaurav Awards’. These were awarded for contribution to the field of Marathi films and theatre. Amit could easily perform the awards ceremony and all events with the help of KALARANG team. The first edition of the awards were a huge success in 2003 and saw 11 stars of the Marathi film industry descending to take the honours. Among them prominent were Sachin Pilgaonkar, Vikram Gokhale, Mrunal Deo Kulkarni and others in the presence of a huge audience.Amit cites his mother, Anuradha and Rahul as being his inspiration for these activities.The Kalagaurav awards ceremony was held for seven consecutive years in which veterans like Sulochana, Mahesh Kothare,Ashok Saraf, Rima Lagu, Kedar Shinde, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Pradip Patwardhan, Kuldip Pawar,Milind Gunaji, Makarand Anaspure,Asha Kale and many more were awarded for their contribution to the Marathi film and theatre world. More than 100 performers were thus honoured in a span of Nine years. Kalarang brought a lot of people together and wove them in a bond of friendship and camaraderie
